An excerpt from an email to my sister:

Lots of things are coming up in the garden: sunflowers (I've planted 3-4 varieties, some ornamental and some with edible seeds), summer squash, pumpkin, zucchini, beans, peas. I planted even more last weekend, and with luck those will come up. One of my roommates put plant starts in some of the areas I seeded unaware that I had done so. Still, there was very little growth, I imagine, from the seeds after only a few days, and so I feel that many will still come up. I've gotten a few perennials seeded as well: lavendar, flax, daisy, black-eyed susan, chamomile, and of particular delight to me, baby's breath (the small white flowers often paired with roses).

In addition to all of that, I've spent many an hour this past month digging up plants growing wild and transplanting them into our backyard. Of note: goldenseal, waterleaf, cohash, violet, jack-in-the-pulpit, blood root, spicebush (this is a tree-ish shrub that I hope can establish itself), daisy, buttercup, geranium, colts foot, milkweed, ginger, and a delightful little plant called 'star of bethleham,' which grows sporadically in residential areas, and produces a small bouquette of six-pointed white flowers. They are also perenial (blooming year after year), and they persist through the dormant months by means of a tiny, potato-like tuber. It gave me a little joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart to pot a few of the tubers and flowers for our nextdoor neightbor, Doctor Childs, who happens to be a preacher.

Star of Bethlehem Picture

Yes, the summer seems like it will be fun and exciting. In addition to the job with the Metro Parks, I'm planning to go down to Asheville again this year to taech at the Firefly Gathering. That's over the second weekend in July. There's also the prospect of a weekend teaching opportunity at a sultisce festival in Meigs County near Athens. That's over the International Festival Weekend, though, and I need to ensure that I'm not obligated to work for it. Hopefully they'll give me a few days off for travel to and from Asheville. I need to get a car for all this traveling!
